Cleveland State held a study abroad fair earlier this year. I had gone, picked up a few brochures, but nothing really stood out for me. Then, last semester, my department head, Dr. Tama Engelking, mentioned an opportunity to study abroad through CSU's French Department. It was a month long program through the University of Rouen and it would satisfy my Capstone requirement. That was it! I decided to do it. I didn't know where I would find the money, but I decided I would find it somehow.
I started researching scholarships and applied for several different grants and was awarded a few small amounts towards this program. I also found out that the Pell Grant funds would apply as well, which was great. An amazing source of information at Cleveland State is Julie Good who is the manager of the Education Abroad programs. She was able to provide me with lots of important information and deadlines. She also encouraged me to apply for the Gilman Scholarship and explained the application process to me. There are two essays to write to apply for the Gilman Scholarship, but for those of you who have had a WAC class, they are nothing compared to that! If you are thinking about applying, I would highly recommend talking to Julie. Cleveland State does so many great study abroad programs and most are eligible for the Gilman Scholarship. The Scholarship awards up to $5000 for study abroad.
