I had the opportunity to interview my professor at the Sorbonne, Professor Jean Louis Fesquet, who taught Grammar and lectured for foreign students this summer, but has taught at the Sorbonne since 1992. I asked him what his best advice is for foreign students studying in Paris or what mistakes we make when trying to learn French or embrace French culture. He said that often with American students our biggest problem is that there is a lot of us. We tend to stick together and talk and hang out with other American students and speak English, so that limits what we learn. "You have to speak the language and make mistakes to be corrected and learn." Mr. Fesquet said. He also said that often students don't spend enough time "being" in France. "We are one of the most alive cities in the world, art, history, architecture, there are museums on nearly every corner. Go to the museum. Walk down a different street, if you see a nice building, go inside, ask what it is! Take chances." He basically talked about leaving our comfort zone and embracing the culture. "Don't just drink wine, find out what it is and where it is from." He constantly recommended to us things to do, places to eat, new things to try in Paris. He encouraged us to be adventurous and make the most of our time here in France. "The language is important. But more important is to see Paris, learn about paris, than to say the right words to order at McDo! (French for McDonalds)." | This is where I went to school and Prof. Fesquet taught. |
